Ireland’s new media commission, Coimisiún na Meán, is currently being established following the publication last year of a report on the future of media and the enactment of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Act. In February 2023, the Minister with responsibility for media, Catherine Martin, announced the appointment of an Executive Chairperson and three commissioners covering broadcasting, the future of media and online safety. Tom Felle, head of the discipline of Journalism and Communication at the University of Galway, analyses the challenges facing the new commission, especially the issue of funding public service media and content.
